Bringing a newborn home is an exciting and joyous occasion, but it can also be overwhelming for new parents. Here鈥檚 how 屌毛成人导航newborn care services can help you navigate this precious time.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period is a critical time for a mother鈥檚 physical and emotional recovery. Postpartum care services provide essential support, including assistance with breastfeeding, recovery exercises, and emotional counseling. Experiencing a C-Section is a significant undertaking, as it involves major surgery, and it’s crucial for every mother to anticipate a recovery period of 4-6 weeks. Whether this is your first venture into the realm of C-Sections or you’re a seasoned veteran, being well-informed about the post-surgery expectations is essential.

Typically, most C-Section procedures necessitate a four-day hospital stay following the delivery. Once back home, you’ll receive advice to refrain from lifting anything heavier than your newborn and to abstain from activities such as driving or navigating stairs. These guidelines, though essential for a smooth recovery, can pose particular challenges for mothers residing in multi-story homes. In the face of these obstacles, what options are available to support mothers during this recovery phase?

Hiring an expert to help you take care of the baby is a great option. Postpartum Doula’s, or a Newborn Care Specialist can all help Mom recover and heal from her surgery.

Postpartum Doula

A Postpartum Doula provides support for the mother and the rest of the family. A big part of the Doula鈥檚 job is to 鈥渕other the mother鈥 and help the new mother recover after birth. The Doula can offer breastfeeding and bottle-feeding support, help establish newborn procedures and routines, along with other infant care needs. The Doula can also provide some light housekeeping, errand running and meal preparation.

Newborn Care Specialist (NCS)

The responsibilities of the NCS include feeding, bathing, changing the infant, washing/cleaning/sterilizing bottles, and initiating a schedule for sleeping, meals, nap and play time. Other responsibilities include advising and providing any requested consultation on infant needs, swaddling, breastfeeding guidance, cord and circumcision care and nursery organization. An NCS can work days, nights or around the clock. The training a NCS receives can vary from more official groups like to smaller trainings led by individual agencies or no specific training at all. Many NCS have been providing care to new moms for decades! They bring to the family years of practical experience.

These caregivers offer overnight services. A good night’s sleep is by far the biggest need for parents with an infant! The caregiver typically arrives at 10 pm and stays until 6 or 7 am, allowing parents to sleep and feel well rested for the next day.

I spent a lovely afternoon at the movies in South Miami watching 鈥淭ully鈥 with TLC Miami鈥檚 most loved and requested Newborn Care Specialist Patricia Demerite. Even though reviews have been mixed we really enjoyed the movie.

Tully spoke to each of us in so many ways. As a parent of 2 and owner of TLC, I could relate to the chaos and sleep deprivation of a Postpartum mom and the demands of a special needs child while managing a household. Patricia, who has helped over a dozen families over the last 5 years navigate the demands of adding a new baby to a family could relate to the the sensitive nature of working in an intimate family environment. Throughout the movie Pat would lean over to me saying things like “she should wash her hands when she walks in the house,”听 “she shouldn鈥檛 be wearing that midriff,” and “she needs to give the mom more personal space.” When things get weird in the movie and she brings Tully to the bedroom we both look at each other like ‘ok, now this is really weird.’听 At the end of the movie we discovered the reason for a lot of the immature oversharing behavior and took a sigh of relief.

After the movie Pat and I discussed Marlo’s (mom) lack of support. We both questioned why Marlo was not willing to take the gift of the night nanny when offered. Why is there a stigma that women have to do it all?听 Had Marlo accepted help or at least engaged the support of her husband and family she might not have ended up where she did. ***I don’t want to give away any spoilers!***

Postpartum depression and manic behavior require professional help. Hiring a Newborn Care Specialist will not treat postpartum depression. But Patricia and I both feel that the help would have given Marlo support and perhaps directed her to the right professional.听 Like Marlo, many moms suffer sleep deprivation and loss of identity aftee the birth of a baby.听 This is because they feel they like they have no support and help. 听 Hiring a Newborn Care Specialist can help moms get on track to feel like themselves again.

Bringing home a new baby is an exciting and joyous time. It can also be overwhelming and exhausting to care for your new baby, yourself and your family. TLC for Kids offers new parents three options to help adjust to life at home. All three options bring assistance to parents caring for a new baby. But what is the difference between a Postpartum Doula, a Baby Nurse and a Newborn Care Specialist? Questions like this come to the TLC office every day.
Here is a description of each option.

Postpartum Doula

A Postpartum Doula provides support for the mother and the rest of the family. A big part of the Doula鈥檚 job is to 鈥渕other the mother鈥 and help the new mother recover after birth. With a Doula there is a lot of focus on education. The Doula can offer breastfeeding and bottle feeding support, help establish newborn procedures and routines, along with other infant care needs. The Postpartum Doula aims to make the mother comfortable and confident in her new role, and to empower the parents to care for their new baby themselves. The Doula can also provide some light housekeeping, errand running and meal preparation. In Miami and Fort Lauderdale Postpartum Doulas can range from $14-$25 per hour.

The hours typically range 4-6 hours a day, but overnights are also possible. The parents can also decide if they want the Doula every day or just a few days a week. There are certification programs that some Doulas complete through these organizations: DONA, CAPPA, Maternity Wise, or Childbirth International.

Baby Nurse

In South Florida parents typically use the word 鈥淏aby Nurse鈥 to describe around the clock infant care assistance. This person is usually not a registered nurse. She is typically a non-medically trained caregiver whose main focus is on the infant. The Baby Nurse has a bed in the room with the baby. She is responsible for feeding, changing, burping, rocking, soothing, and swaddling the new baby. The baby nurse may also assist with the infant’s laundry and bottle washing. In the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area a live-in Baby Nurse charges between $200 and $275 per day.

The training a NCS receives can vary from more official groups like Newborn Care Specialist Association (NCSA) to smaller trainings led by individual agencies or no specific training at all. Many NCS have been providing care to new moms for decades! They bring to the family years of practical experience.

All three caregivers offer overnight services. A good night’s sleep is by far the biggest need for parents with an infant! The caregiver typically arrives at 10 pm and stays until 6 or 7 am, allowing parents to sleep and feel well rested for the next day.

For more information, call TLC and ask about Postpartum Doulas, Baby Nurses, and Newborn Care Specialists today. TLC can provide an extra set of loving arms for you and your new baby!

Bringing home听a new听baby is a transition for everyone. While welcoming home a new baby with hugs and love is amazing, sometimes bringing home a baby can be overwhelming.听 When I came home with my new babies I was overwhelmed with emotion and the needs placed on me.听 I was recovering from a C-Section and sleep deprived.听In听our house,听Dad had to go back to work and I was at home taking care baby and the siblings in the house who missed being the center of attention.听 Help!

TLC for Kids knows this transitional period requires more help than usual, so we have two different options to help your family adjust to a new baby.

1 . Newborn Overnight Nanny. At TLC for Kids, we have caregivers who work as overnight newborn nannies. An overnight newborn nanny is a caregiver that comes to your house around bedtime and stays awake through the night (they are required to stay awake the entire time) to take care of the baby when he/she wakes up. The overnight nanny will feed the baby(or bring baby to mom for nursing), change, rock and put the baby back to sleep. This allows new parents to catch up on rest and enjoy a full night鈥檚 sleep because they know their baby is receiving the best care possible.

2. Newborn Specialist. If welcoming a new baby is harder than getting sleep at night, TLC for Kids also offers child care providers who are newborn specialists. Newborn specialists help parents in their home the first few weeks or months of baby’s life with parent education, feeding/breastfeeding, basic baby care, and light housekeeping. Newborn specialists can also help older siblings adjust to sharing mom and dad鈥檚 attention with a new baby in the house. Whether you are a seasoned mom or new to parenting, a newborn specialist is an option to help your family adjust.

TLC for Kids is ready to assist you and your growing family, so whether you are expecting and want to find a caregiver before your baby arrives, or already have a newborn but need help, call TLC for Kids today: (314) 725-5660.

Although Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) cannot be prevented, there are things that parents and caregivers can to do reduce the risk of SIDS. One of the easiest ways to lower a baby’s risk of SIDS is to place him or her on their back to sleep, at nighttime and for naps. In 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on Infant Sleep Position issued a statement recommending that infants be placed to their backs to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS. A public awareness program, the Back to Sleep campaign was initiated by the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) in 1994 in conjunction with other health care organizations to promote education about this recommendation. Between 1992 and 1998, the number of SIDS deaths declined by 40 percent which most researchers, policymakers and SIDS professionals agree is a result of the change in sleep position.

With continued research, SIDS experts now know that other factors such as exposure to smoke, sleeping on soft bedding and becoming overheated can increase an infant’s risk for SIDS. In 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on Infant Sleep Position and SIDS issued revised recommendations to incorporate these new findings. NICHD subsequently revised their Back to Sleep educational materials to include the latest SIDS risk reduction measures.

The California State SIDS Advisory Council in October 2006 unanimously endorsed the National Back to Sleep materials (i.e.: pamphlets, doorknob hangers and tear sheets) with the AAP Safe Sleep Top Ten messages for use in California. This endorsement was supported by the California Department of Public Health, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division and California SIDS Program.

Expectant families, parents, babysitters, grandparents, childcare providers and everyone who cares for a baby should know and follow the Safe Sleep Top Ten recommendations listed below.

1. Infants should be placed for sleep in a supine position (wholly on the back) for every sleep. Side sleeping is not as safe as supine sleeping and is not advised.

2. Use a firm sleep surface. Water beds, quilts, etc., should not be placed under an infant. A firm crib mattress covered by a sheet is the recommended sleeping surface.

3. Keep soft objects, toys and loose bedding out of the baby’s sleep area.

4. Do not smoke during pregnancy. Do not expose babies to second hand smoke after birth.

5. A separate, but proximate, sleeping environment is recommended. That is, room-sharing is to be encouraged, but not bed sharing. Babies brought to an adult bed for breastfeeding should be returned to their own sleep area when breastfeeding is finished.

6. Consider offering a pacifier during sleep. A pacifier should not be reinserted if it falls out after the infant is asleep. The pacifier should not be coated with sweet liquids and should be washed and replaced regularly. For breastfed infants, pacifier use should be delayed until one month of age to ensure breastfeeding is firmly established.

7. Avoid overheating. Over bundling should be avoided and the infant should not feel hot to the touch.

8. Avoid commercial devices marketed to decrease the risk of SIDS; such as wedges to maintain an infant’s position or “flow-through” mattresses designed to eliminate rebreathing.

9. Do not use home monitors as a strategy to reduce the risk of SIDS.

10. Avoid the development of flat heads (positional plagiocephaly). Supervised “tummy time” while baby is awake and alternating the sleeping direction of the head during
